How many of you made it to Jamestown for “Doors Open”? What a great turnout! Third Street was full of parked cars and the parking lots of the other attractions were jam packed! Kind of reminded me of the Holidays—people walking all over and the restaurants all seemed to be busy. If you were not able to attend this year you should make every effort to do it next year. The Lucy Desi Center, Jamestown Savings Bank Ice Arena, Reg Lenna Civic Center, Robert Jackson Center, Roger Tory Peterson Institute, Fenton History Center, Chautauqua Sports Hall of Fame and Jamestown Audubon all took part in this event. We are certainly blessed with the attractions we have here in Jamestown.
One area DJDC tries to provide is educational resources for our community residents as well as our area businesses. In the past we have teamed up with Jamestown Community College and their Continuing Education Department to produce some educational opportunities for community members and businesses. We are doing that again this Spring. Our first class will be “The ABCs of Social Media”. This seminar will be held on Tuesday, February 21 from 8 am to 9:30 am in the Dr. Lillian Vitanza Ney Renaissance Center. This seminar is open to everyone and there will be a small charge for the class. The idea of this class is to help people understand the basics of social media and how it can affect your life and business. Discussion will revolve around terms, concepts and what the future will bring. Those with no experience are encouraged to attend—and since I fall into that category I will be attending the course to learn all I can. Discussion points will be: 1) what is social media or social networking? 2) Understanding the social media landscape. 3) Am I involved with social media even though I am not participating? 4) Can I just ignore this and will it go away? And 5) Essential vocabulary. More information will be provided but registration is required. If you would like to register or have questions please call Tiffani at our office—664-2477 or email her at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Another area that kind of falls into this area is a survey we are providing, along with the JCC Continuing Education Department that will give us input on any subjects you might like to have a seminar about that will help you personally or your business. The JCC Continuing Ed Program offers a huge number of courses about almost any subject and we are prepared to work with JCC to present these to our community. DJDC is more then willing to host any of these classes or seminars—all you have to do is tell us what you need and we will do our very best to provide it.
One other activity I wish to mention this morning is another survey. Now I know some of you are probably saying—“Not Another Survey”! Geesh! Well this is one of the best ways we have of finding out “how we are doing in our downtown”. So we would like to encourage you to take a few minutes and fill out this survey. The survey refers to such things as how business is doing, how events affect our downtown, how we at DJDC are doing with all our activities and how you all feel, as a whole, how we are doing in our community redevelopment. All classes will be held at the Infinity Center at 115 East Third Street right here in downtown Jamestown. This is a beautiful facility that is well staffed and if you are interested in the performing arts and music this is your place to go. You can call 664-0991 and ask for Shane Hawkins if you have questions or would like more information. |
