Another fault in an underground power line caused a power outage early Monday, affecting much of the downtown area.
The fault occurred at 9:44 a.m., killing power to Jamestown Board of Public Utilities customers from Brooklyn Square all the way up to Sixth Street, and from The Post-Journal to as far east as Jamestown High School.
City Hall, the Reg Lenna Civic Center, the YMCA and other customers in the downtown area were without electricity for as much as two hours while BPU crews worked to restore power.

A CALL FOR SMALLER GOVERNMENT

The call for smaller government has been a rallying cry for so long that it has become meaningless. The only problem is no one ever really knew what smaller government meant. In Chautauqua County and Jamestown people clamor that taxes are too high and that governments spend too much and that county and city employees make too much money. In all fairness, lawmakers are faced with a dilemma; taxes are too high, but people complain—not whether the streets are plowed, but plowed in a timely fashion. Well intentioned people, good citizens demand public order but do not want to pay for that law part and call for the elimination of road patrols by county deputies.

Jeff Erickson's new band, Willoughby, will perform Saturday at at Mojo's with the Steve Johnson Band. The band, formerly Next Stop Willoughby, last played Forte at the end of summer as part of Local Music Showcase. Saturday's concert at Mojo's will be a celebration of the Steve Johnson Band's one year together as a band. What follows is the transcription of a phone interview with Jeff Erickson: NICK - You guys played Forte on Local Music Showcase night. Was that a first show for you guys? Warning: This blog is a complete stream-of-consciousness rant about a social networking site. Reader discretion is advised. Facebook. Pretty much everyone below the age of about 30 is on it, right? Because it is such a widespread phenomenon, I'm not going to waste a lot of time describing how it works. You sign up, you make a little profile page, you find a bunch of your friends on there, you all upload pictures of everyone acting like buffoons (pictures which will some day keep everyone from being elected to anything), and you all have a merry old time. That's social networking in a nutshell. One of the neato things on Facebook is the ability to post your "status." You can let all your friends know what you are doing at any given moment. Anyone who's ever purchased a house knows very well the feeling of total exhilaration that comes when you've finally got your very first house key in your hand. And anyone who's ever bought a house knows that feeling is almost immediately followed by the "Oh, crap, can I really afford this?" feeling -- even though you know full well that you can. I moved into my first house last weekend, with the help of my parents, my Uncle Rick and my brother-in-law, John. It was amazing to see a move go so smoothly. In years past, living in North Carolina by myself, it was always horribly difficult finding friends who would come help haul the sofa down two flights of stairs in a cramped apartment building and then haul it back up a flight in a new (but still cramped) apartment building. It took just five hours to move all of my junk from Frewsburg to a little house in Jamestown and my family members were practically falling over themselves with eagerness to help. "Start

An Apologetic Whitless Wonder Begs Your Forgiveness

Who has two thumbs and hasn't had time to update his blog in a week? THIS GUY! The Whitless Wonder apologizes for the inactivity and promises to get back on the stick soon. The public might not see a city editor's name in the paper every day like they did when he was a reporter, but let me be the first to tell you the life of an editor is horrendous during the holidays. We publish seven days a week, and all but one reporter are off Christmas and New Year's Day. Plus, a lot of the people our reporters need to talk to are out of the office or not available for nearly two consecutive weeks. So, nearly our entire news staff loses one entire day of productive time (and how productive can you really be during the holidays?) and are also at the whims of their sources' vacation schedules. NFL Playoff Preview, Yankees Vs. The World & Top 10 WORST NFL Jersey Purchases

In case I take another extended hiatus from updating this thing, I'll throw a bunch of blog-worthy items into one big messy conceptual thought. NFL Playoff Preview Week 17 was kind of a bitter sweet situation for me. The Patriots are out (bullseye!) the Cowboys are out (Horrible) and the Colts play the Chargers (Worried in Indy). Other than that...not a whole lot of surprises. Luckily for my Colts, they're playing the Chargers after they've been getting REALLY jacked up for big wins. How long can that continue? Ask the steelers in week 16. After a while, playing really good teams/important games catches up with you. Thats what I am banking on...that and a healthy lineup finally...and the NFL MVP. Segway -- If Peyton Manning isn't MVP, something is wrong. Matt Ryan? Rookie of the year is good enough. Other trendy MVP considerations should be Michael Turner, Adrian Peterson and...wait for it....keep waiting...Donovan McNabb. Scary thoug

Nano iPhone?

With the 2009 MacWorld Expo scheduled to start within a week, rumors are now flying fast and furiously on the Net. One that has started taking hold is a new iPhone model supposedly to be called the iPhone Nano. Like the iPod Nano, this should be a smaller, less expensive version of the iPhone rumored to be $99. First, do we need a smaller cheaper iPhone. Considering the price of the very first iPhone that miraculously dropped $200 just a few months after its release, the latest iPhone starts at $199. This price is pretty low for what it is and is insignificant compared to what the operating cost of the iPhone is for the required two year contract (plans start around $70/mo. unlimited texting adds another $20). For the 2-year contract you will likely have spent $2400. Now doesn't that pale to the price of the iPhone. Second, what will you loose with an iPhone Nano. Since this is only a rumor the form factor can only be guessed at. Would the screen be much smaller? For t

Tips for better Winter Snow pictures. 1. Set your white balance to manual. The super bright snow can mess with automatic white balance functions on many digital cameras. Most cameras have several presets you can choose from - daylight, overcast, cloudy, indoor, fluorescent, etc. If available, try the manual white balance. 2. Use fill-flash. On a bright day, the snow can cause very harsh lighting conditions. If you subject is backlit even by the slightest amount, fill flash can work wonders. Check out your user manual for proper fill flash technique. 3. Shoot the action. Winter is full of winter sports. Action photography needs lots of light to allow for faster shutter speed to stop motion. Luckily when there is lots of white snow there is plenty of light. Remember to make sure your shutter speeds are up in the 1/250th or faster. 4. Look for bright colors. While crisp white snow is beautiful to some, injecting some nice bright warm tones will make for a m
